What is Mesothelioma?


Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that affects the mesothelium - the thin protective membrane covering the lungs, heart and other internal organs. The disease is usually caused by exposure to asbestos fibers.Mesothelioma is a very aggressive form of cancer that is usually resistant to standard therapy of cancer. Although there is no cure for mesothelioma, several clinical trials studying the disease and several cases of remission have been reported. Moreover, treatments that are effective for pain, suffering and symptoms, prolong life and generally improve the quality of life of the patient.

Most mesothelioma patients may not even realize that they have cancer before symptoms begin to interfere in their daily lives. The symptoms are not usually appear until at least 20 years after someone has been exposed to asbestos, and sometimes the symptoms are hidden for as long as 50 years.
